Angostura & Coffee Flip
Winter 2019
A riff on a dramatic drink made with a full ounce of Angostura bitters, this cocktail features a little bitter coffee too. It’s total comfort—a bit like a cozy sweater on a cold winter’s night.
Makes 1 cocktail
1 oz rye
½ oz Angostura bitters
½ oz Cinnamon Syrup (recipe follows)
½ oz cream
½ oz strong coffee
1 egg
In a cocktail shaker, combine rye, Angostura bitters, Cinnamon Syrup (recipe follows), cream, strong coffee and egg; shake vigorously, without ice, for 15 seconds or so. Add ice and shake 30 seconds longer; strain into a coupe and garnish with a pinch of cinnamon.
Makes 1 cocktail
To make Cinnamon Syrup, combine ½ cup (125 mL) each water and sugar in a small pot over medium heat; stir to melt and add a 4-inch (10-cm) cinnamon stick. Cover and boil 5 minutes; let stand for an hour at room temperature, remove cinnamon stick and chill. Will keep indefinitely in the fridge.
Makes about ¾ cup (175 mL)
