Freedom of Information
In Ontario, a Freedom of Information (FOI) request is a written request for general records, one’s own personal information, or a correction to one’s own personal information, held by a government organization that is subject to the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (FIPPA).
FOI requests must be received in writing by the organization holding the records. In order to be processed, the request must provide sufficient detail to identify the information in question, and be accompanied by a mandatory $5 application fee.
The $5 fee is payable to the LCBO by cheque or money order, or a credit card payment can be made by calling the telephone number below during regular business hours. Under FIPPA’s regulated fee structure, you may also be charged for the time required to locate and prepare records, photocopying, and/or other products or services.
Organizations under FIPPA must generally respond to an FOI request within 30 days. Under certain circumstances, an organization may extend this time frame. In such cases, the party making the request will be notified.
