Cristal Vinothèque: The lap of luxury

Roederer chef de cave Jean-Baptiste Lécaillon believes that Champagne should be enjoyed when it’s reached its full potential. Traditionally, non-vintage Champagne is enjoyed young and fresh with a mere 15 months of maturity, and vintage Champagne is required to spend a minimum of three years in cellar before release. Cristal is disgorged eight years after vintage.

To the master, this simply isn’t enough time for something so fine. That’s why Lécaillon created the Vinothèque project to allow people to experience Champagne at its best.

The process ages wines an extra eight years sur lie and another four years cork-stoppered in the cellar after disgorgement. After 20+ years of patience, the result is a fully fleshed, mature Cristal with incredible depth of character.

“When I took over the winemaking in 1999, I had two goals; one was in the vineyards, working on the long-term health of the vines, but the other was in the cellar.” (Jean-Baptiste Lécaillon as quoted in Decanter, Oct. 21, 2020)

Vintages is proud to offer a select few bottles of this exquisite Champagne. If you’ve yet to try a perfectly well-aged vintage Cristal, this is your chance to experience true luxury.

Quantities are very limited. Orders are first come, first served.

Vigorello: A Supertuscan for the ages

“… if there is one wine that fiercely represents the evolution of winemaking in Italy … then it is this Supertuscan.” (Aldo Fiordelli, decanter.com)

First produced in 1968, Vigorello is one of Tuscany’s most historic wines. The first vintage of Vigorello was crafted from 100% Sangiovese. Over the years, continued experimentation and refinement of the wine led to the inclusion of varying percentages of international grapes, namely Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot. In 2011, the ancient indigenous grape Pugnitello, which was rediscovered in 1981, replaced Sangiovese in the blend. It’s a testament to the care and focus of San Felice’s process that it was only after 30 years of experimentation and development in the vineyard that they made this move. The grape has since become the backbone of the wine. San Felice’s winemaker Leonardo Bellaccini has said that the inclusion of Pugnitello gave “… back to the wine its Tuscan blood.”

This offer includes seven vintages of Vigorello spanning 2008 to 2019. There are multiple-size bottlings from the 2008, 2017, 2018 and 2019 vintages, a magnum of the 2016, and 750 mL bottlings of the 2013 and 2015.

Vigorello, a wine of pedigree, provenance and historic importance.

Quantities of this legendary Tuscan wine are limited. Orders are first come, first served.

Baettig: Masterful dry-farmed wines

“[Baettig produces] small batches sold as limited editions to selected buyers. One of the most interesting producers among the emerging talents of Chile. Their Chardonnays raise the bar for white wines in the country.” (Joaquin Hidalgo, March 2023, vinous.com)

Francisco “Pancho” Baettig established his reputation as a winemaker with Chile’s iconic Errázuriz. He began exploring the potential of a solo project in 2013, working with Chardonnay and Pinot Noir in a site in Malleco that had belonged to his cousin. He called the vineyard Viñedo Los Suizos to honour his Swiss heritage, and through experimentation and patience, worked to understand the potential of the site’s volcanic soils. Initially, Baettig sold fruit to leading Chilean producers such as P.S. García, De Martino and Undurraga, ending the practice in 2020. He began to vinify his own wines in 2017 and left Errázuriz at the end of 2023 to focus entirely on his solo project, which now includes a Cabernet vineyard in Maule. This offer includes Chardonnays from 2020 and 2021, Pinot Noirs from 2020, 2021 and 2022 and a Cabernet from 2022. Rare, high-scoring wines that speak to the continued evolution of Chile’s premium-wine landscape with breathtaking precision.

“… artisanal [wines] … destined to achieve the expression of the place rather than the hand of the winemaker.” (Luis Gutiérrez, robertparker.com)

The excitement around these new, rare Chilean expressions now available in Ontario is high. Orders are first come, first served.

Gaja: Greatness in a glass

It takes a lot of effort and a lot of faith to start a winery. But it takes even more to change the world.

Beginning as humble growers of the Nebbiolo grape, the Gaja family would push the boundaries of northern Italian innovation by introducing cutting-edge ideas influenced by their neighbours in France that the region of Piedmont had never seen before.

Decades ago, the techniques of aggressive vine pruning, extensive ageing in new French oak barriques, and planting international grapes in Italian soil were nothing short of heresy. But to a radical thinker like Angelo Gaja, they were necessary for making wines of astonishing quality.

And the result? James Suckling claimed that “Gaja’s single-vineyard reds are some of the greatest wines produced in Italy.” (Wine Spectator)

The family have since expanded to incorporate vineyards in Tuscany’s iconic Bolgheri and Brunello regions to further develop their already legendary portfolio. Their Pieve Santa Restituta and Ca’ Marcanda labels have received universal acclaim from aficionados and critics alike.

Order today! Quantities of these tresori italiani are limited and orders are first come, first served.

UGCB: Bordeaux’s classically styled 2021s

Explore more than 80 wines from the 2021 vintage.

For collectors and neophytes alike, there’s no region so immediately recognizable and exciting as Bordeaux. The premium wines of Bordeaux are the global benchmark for excellence. This offer features wines from more than 65 member producers of the Union des Grands Crus de Bordeaux.

“The 2021 Bordeaux have turned out to be such a surprise. Weather conditions were challenging, and yet the top properties turned out gorgeous, classically built wines that will absolutely thrill readers who appreciate freshness and energy.” (Antonio Galloni, vinous.com)

“… anyone who enjoys the great benchmark Bordeaux wines of the 1980s and 1990s should seriously reflect on what the 2021s may have to offer in 10 to 15 years’ time. It’s a style of wine that could come from nowhere else ... And if the 2021s’ balance is reminiscent of a vintage from yesteryear, the best wines benefit from all the precision of modern winemaking, displaying beautifully refined, polished tannins.” (William Kelley, robertparker.com)

Union des Grands Crus de Bordeaux: the 2020 vintage

“[Bordeaux’s 2020 vintage produced] … outstanding quality across all appellations from simple Bordeaux to Pomerol.” (James Suckling, May 27, 2021)

Bordeaux is perhaps the beating heart of the wine world. Even for those for whom wine is little more than a curiosity, the name impresses not only a sense of quality and legacy but also an awareness of the significance of vintage.

This offer includes wines from across this iconic region, highlighting the finest attributes of the nuanced, dynamic, impressive 2020 vintage, crafted by members of the Union des Grands Crus de Bordeaux.

“… the 2020s impress for a combination of energy and vibrancy that is hugely appealing …” (Antonio Galloni, vinous.com, June 1, 2021)

“… [2020 is not just] a Right Bank or Merlot vintage – 2020 is far more nuanced and complicated than that ... I concur with some winemakers who hailed their Cabernet fruit as some of the best they had ever seen.” (Neal Martin, vinous.com, May 27, 2021)

“There is talk that this is a ‘Merlot vintage,’ which greatly oversimplifies the situation … [much of] the Cabernet Franc grown in Saint-Émilion is astonishingly gorgeous this year – shining like beacons in the blends … And there are Cabernet Sauvignon-dominated sites/wines … that managed to produce wines of jaw-dropping greatness this year.” (Lisa Perrotti-Brown, robertparker.com, May 20, 2021)
