Vodka Simple Syrup

Vodka Simple Syrup

Holiday 2016

By: Michelle P. E. Hunt and Laura Panter

You love your vodka lover, but you will also love making this syrup for them! Just peeling the oranges fills the kitchen with a wonderful fresh citrus aroma. The syrup is very versatile and goes with almost any fruit juice, which makes it the perfect gift for the holiday season. The lovely pink hue adds subtle tones to a simple Vodka & Soda, or can be mixed into a holiday Cosmo Martini with cranberry juice and lime. If your loved one prefers their vodka neat, you can include a recipe card for holiday ice cubes; pour equal parts Vodka Simple Syrup and water into an ice cube tray, then add frozen cranberries before freezing. Serve 2 to 3 ice cubes and 2 oz vodka for a delicious cocktail that changes flavor as the ice melts.

Makes approx. 8 cocktails using 1 oz of syrup

To a heatproof jar, add ½ cup (125 mL) frozen (thawed) cranberries and muddle lightly. Peel a whole orange with a potato peeler and add peel to the jar, along with 4 star anise pods, ½ cup (125 mL) sugar and ½ cup (125 mL) boiling water. Stir to dissolve the sugar and allow to cool. Put in a lidded jar and store in the fridge for 4 to 24 hours. Strain out liquid into a decorative bottle for gifting, discarding the solids.
