Blood and Sand

Blood and Sand

Winter 2012

By: Dave Mitton, The Harbord Room

This cocktail was created in 1922 for the film of the same name, starring Rudolph Valentino as a hard-drinking matador. The drink was popular in the ’20s and ’30s but largely fell from the scene until recently. It’s an unusual combination of ingredients, but a favourite with serious cocktail bars. Mitton prefers Auchentoshan Single Malt Scotch Whisky for its smooth caramel flavours, Martini & Rossi red vermouth for its balanced sweetness, and the classic Cherry Heering liqueur for its ability to bring lavishness, extravagance and civilization to any cocktail.

¾ oz Auchentoshan Single Malt Scotch Whisky
¾ oz Martini & Rossi red vermouth
¾ oz Cherry Heering Liqueur
¾ oz fresh orange juice
Hard ice

1 Combine all ingredients in a cocktail shaker with ice.

2 Place the cheater tin upside down in the larger shaker and tap to seal the 2 tumblers together. Holding the bottom of the larger shaker in the palm of 1 hand and pressing the cheater tin with the other, shake vigorously until well blended. Tap the cheater tin with the heel of your hand to break the seal.

3 Pour mixture through a fine strainer into a coupette glass.
