The 2016 Tinto (Quinta da Pellada), the estate flagship with Quinta da Pellada on the label, is a field blend (over 40 grapes) from old vines. It is principally, for identified grapes, Alvarelhão, Tinta Pinheira and Tinta Amarela. Plus, since 1991, Castro uses some Jaen and Touriga Nacional. It was aged for 24 months in well-used French barriques (five to seven years old) and comes in at 13.3% alcohol. This year, this is sourced from the Mata and Casa vineyard blocks. This opens with elegance, but the impressive concentration becomes obvious in short order. Then, it shows off ripe tannins but serious power. At all junctures, this seems so well balanced that nothing stands out, yet everything sort of does. That said, this is not quite as expressive as the concentrated 2015, at least not yet. There are hints of great fruit in the background, though. It is a wine for the long term that will age well. Don't let the fact that it seems approachable fool you - it needs a few years in the cellar to open up. Drink date: 2021-2045. Score - 95. (Mark Squires, robertparker.com, Aug. 30, 2019)
