With 120 days of appassimento, resulting in 16% alcohol and nine grams per liter of residual sugar, you know you're getting a big wine in the 2011 Amarone della Valpolicella Riserva. The bouquet peels back to super thick and rich black fruit, shaped by powerful spice, tar and campfire ash. The hot vintage adds to the dark, inky and full-bodied intensity of this 70% Corvina, 20% Corvinone and 10% Rondinella blend, aged in barrique for 24 months. It's almost too much of a good thing. Some 20,000 bottles were made. 92 points Robert Parker Wine Advocate
