From 45-year-old vines in Mercurol, Villard's 2017 Crozes Hermitage Malfondieres was vinified as whole clusters in an oak vat, then aged in used barrels for 18 months. Cassis and black cherry notes lead the way in this medium to full-bodied wine, which is graced with hints of crushed stone, a velvety feel and some faintly stemmy notes (herbal tea) on the finish. Tasted twice (once blind) about a week apart, it came across more structured and chewier on one occasion than the other, although the quality was otherwise consistent. Drink date: 2020-2028. Score - 91. (Joe Czerwinski, robertparker.com, Jan. 31, 2020)
