Domain Mega Spileo Grand Cave Dry Red 2013

750 mL bottle  |   VINTAGES#:  466110

The 2013 Domain Mega Spileo Grand Cave, the red blend in this lineup, is a 60/40 blend of Mavrodaphne and Mavro Kalavritino aged for 24 months in 70% new oak, mostly French. It comes in at 14.5% alcohol. A single-vineyard wine from 14-year-old vines, this won't be released until mid-2019. This is along the same lines as the 2012 when I first saw that - a little creamy from the wood, hard-edged thanks to the tannins, undeveloped and packed with red fruit flavors. Overall, this seems to have better balance and focus compared to the 2012, along with a hint of game. Ultimately, it should become the better wine, although the 2012 probably drinks slightly better today. At the moment, this needs to be cellared a bit more, or it needs a couple of hours in a decanter. It is too tight and the tannins eventually get in the way of the fruit as it airs out. That said, as with the 2012, an extra hour of air brought it back around to a considerable extent. It does a lot of things beautifully. Eventually, you'll love this for both its flavor and structure. It should age well. Drink date: 2020-2033. Score - 91+. (Mark Squires,, Dec. 28, 2018)
