Rose Martini
Spring 2006
While the ancient Egyptians, Greeks and Romans all managed to extract scent from roses, it was not until the ninth century that large-scale distillation took place in Persia. Rosewater's availability meant it was a common ingredient in many recipes. The Crusaders carried this flavouring back to Europe where it was popular in medieval English cooking. Rosewater can be found at specialty food stores, or at Indian or Middle-Eastern stores.
Makes 1 cocktail
1½ oz gin
½ oz rose water
1 piece of lemon zest
Pour all the ingredients into a cocktail shaker and add ice. Shake and then strain into a Martini glass. Garnish with a rose petal.
