Bronx
Summer 2004
There are so many cocktails that suit a fine summer day it almost seems perverse to single out one or two, but I would be remiss if I didn't mention the Bronx. This is one of those drinks that has been waiting patiently to be rediscovered in recent years. It has a long history (invented some 80 years ago by Johnny Solon, barman of the Waldorf-Astoria hotel, after a visit to the Bronx Zoo) but, properly made, it still tastes as fresh as tomorrow. Freshly squeezed orange juice is crucial to the flavour of a Bronx.
1 oz gin
1/2 oz dry white vermouth
1/2 oz sweet red vermouth
1 oz freshly squeezed orange juice
1. Combine ingredients in a cocktail shaker with ice. Shake. Strain into a Martini glass. Garnish with a slice of orange. It's as simple as that.
