Americano
Summer 2004
The mid-19th century in Northern Italy was the heyday of vermouth. No wonder that as soon as Campari appeared, creative mixologists began to experiment with other bittersweet favourites. Stirring Campari and sweet red vermouth together proved a delicious way of bringing out the best in both drinks, with or without a splash of soda water to lengthen and refresh the cocktail. Perhaps because so many American tourists preferred this sweeter drink to a straight Campari and soda, it eventually became known as an Americano. Some prefer more or less vermouth than this recipe suggests
1 oz Campari
1½ oz red vermouth
A splash of soda (optional)
1. In an old fashioned glass, add 2 or 3 ice cubes, the Campari and the vermouth. Stir. Add soda, if desired.
2. Garnish with a slice of orange.
