Featuring a bit more residual sugar and less alcohol than its Clos Windsbuhl and Heimbourg siblings, the Zind-Humbrecht 2011 Gewurztraminer Goldert is utterly different, arguably as reflects the sticky Marne marl and extremely high, active lime of this elevated, east-facing site in which these grapes hung longer than any others of their cepage and vintage. Praline and salted caramel, cinnamon and crystallized ginger, lychee and roses inform the head-turning bouquet and ravishingly luscious, creamy, almost buttery palate. The confectionary aspects here are not accompanied by the fresh fruit or finishing clarity of the two aforementioned siblings, but there is a soothing, gum- and throat-coating richness to the finish that will be hard for anyone with a sweet tooth for Gewurztraminer to resist. Look for compelling performances through at least 2028. Score - 93. (David Schildknecht,, Aug. 27, 2014)
