Style Watch

White grapes offer endless options for summer sipping. Here’s a rundown of some familiar favourites and lesser-known options worth watching, all featured in this collection.

Godello: A relatively rare variety found in Spain and Portugal, Godello is known for zesty citrus character, briny minerality and brilliant natural acidity. A perfect wine for hot weather, it’s most often served with seafood.

Chardonnay: This grape can do it all. Unoaked versions can be brilliantly fresh, while those that see full malolactic conversion and oak treatment can be rich and buttery. Chardonnay also has a knack for expressing minerality.

Loureiro & Alvarinho: These two grapes are the mainstays of most Vinho Verde from northern Portugal. While both are known for citrus notes, salinity, and vivacious acidity, Loureiro brings more herbal character while Alvarinho provides ripe melon fruit.

Pecorino: Grown in Central Italy everywhere from mountaintops to coastal hillsides, Pecorino is prized for reflecting the complexity of its terroir. Naturally
high in acidity, it makes for balanced wines that can range from delicate to boldly intense.

Pinot Grigio/Pinot Gris: Same grape, two styles – and the clue is often in the name. Wines labelled “Grigio” are usually modelled after the lighter, more delicate Italian style, while those labelled “Gris” follow the more robust Alsatian style.

Riesling: Known for its transparency, versatility, and the ability to cellar like a champ, Riesling can also be enjoyed in
all its youthful glory. Brilliant, lip-smacking acidity makes dry versions wonderfully crisp palate-
refreshers between bites.

Falanghina: With a tad more oomph than your typical light-bodied Italian white wine, Falanghina can showcase a unique array of ripe peach, apricot, honey, floral and nutty notes. Bright acidity makes it a great food wine.

Sauvignon Blanc: Savvy speaks volumes with its huge aromatics and hallmark gooseberry and grassy notes. Wines from New Zealand also tend to show intense tropical fruit, while those of the Loire Valley in France often express minerality.

Best with casual bites

These are wines to pair with simple, easy foods. Think summer salads, deli sandwiches, or bagels and cream cheese. They’re also great for takeaway – tacos, falafel wraps, samosas, noodles, sushi, or fish and chips – or casual barbecue like burgers or kebabs.

Fine with fancier fare

Alright, so the occasion needn’t be fancy, but these are the wines to bust out for a sit-down meal with family and friends. Whether the menu is barbecued seafood, chicken, pork, risotto, pasta alfredo, or your super-secret-recipe homemade pulled-pork mac and cheese, these wines are sure to impress.
