Stellenbosch’s vines grow in some of the world’s most ancient soils. Granite, shale, sandstone and clay are among the most common, but nearly 50 soil types are found here. The cooling ocean breezes from False Bay, the cold Antarctic Benguela Current and the famous Cape Doctor winds ensure freshness and vibrancy, permitting a wide variety of grapes and styles across Stellenbosch’s seven sub-regions.
Cool-climate varieties such as Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir flourish here, and Stellenbosch produces some of the world’s finest Chenin Blanc. The region is the birthplace of South Africa’s signature red, Pinotage, but it’s the stunning Cabernet Sauvignon wines, falling stylistically between those of Napa and Bordeaux, that are Stellenbosch’s crowning achievement. Not surprisingly, the area’s Bordeaux blends are world-class, as are its elegant, spicy Syrahs.
