Exciting wines for al fresco dining

The Mediterranean is a picture-perfect region that boasts endless sunshine, rolling hills, rugged coastlines and cool sea breezes. This region’s sun-kissed climate, diverse topography and enviable proximity to the sea and ocean have long made it the ideal environment for winemaking. Hot dry summers and cool winters allow grapes to ripen more quickly, and that ripeness pays off in bigger flavour. Reds are richer as a result, and whites tropical and lush.

Not surprisingly some of the world’s greatest wine regions, including Italy, France and Spain, are found in and around the Mediterranean basin. Each country contributes its own wine style or varietal to the region’s wine culture: In Italy, Tuscany is home to Chianti, a dry, medium-bodied red, Sicily is known for elegant Nero d'Avola, and Puglia is famous for full-bodied red wines with dark fruit flavours, including Primitivo. In Spain, it’s all about big bold reds like Rioja, or rich blends made from Tempranillo and Grenache grapes. France’s Rhône region is acclaimed for its fruity Syrah and Grenache blends and Provence is a centre for high-quality rosé.

With so many exciting styles offering great value, these are the ideal bottles for bringing a taste of the Mediterranean to your backyard for an end-of-summer feast.
