Summer Is Made for Italian White Wines

Savour every minute of summer with Italy’s white wines

A chilled glass of crisp Italian white wine is the ultimate summer sipper. Famously approachable and affordable, vino bianco is made for al-fresco dining — and a must for sunny days when you’re savouring la dolce vita.

Surprisingly, Italy makes more white wines than red wines and they're as diverse as they are delicious. Pinot Grigio, the classic light, easy-drinking wine with a twist of lemon lime, is probably the country’s most popular. There's also the famous refreshing whites from Soave, simply named by the region rather than the variety (Garganega for the curious), which are equally delicious options with hints of melon, peach and citrus. And all pair beautifully with salads or shrimp.

For a bolder choice, there’s Grillo, a fuller-bodied, more aromatic white from Sicily with notes of peach and zesty sun-ripened citrus. Pecorino, native to the Abruzzo region, is another vibrant pick, brimming with fruit, florals and a dash of minerality. Either is great for grilled fish and shellfish.

Although Italy’s whites are wonderful anytime sippers, fresh, juicy Trebbiano — produced in every wine region — makes an ideal aperitivo, while Moscato’s delicately sweet, subtly bubbly personality is a nice choice for toasting or as a treat with dessert.

Bright and lively, Italian white wines are the perfect companion to the season’s lighter mood and lighter menus, whether for everyday or entertaining. And best of all, they taste like summer.
