Trending Italian Wines: Grillo, Vermentino & Pecorino

Get in vacation mode with these up-and-coming varietals from Italy

Breezy summer days and leisurely nights are the perfect opportunity to sip and sample Italian white wine varietals that are new to the LCBO. Versatile year-round, these Italian whites are made from indigenous grape varietals and are easygoing, food-friendly and affordable. They also make wonderful gifts for your summer host.

If you like Pinot Grigio, try Grillo (say “GREE-lo”)

Grown in the hot, dry Sicilian climate in southern Italy, Grillo is a vibrant white wine, with a bright acidity and medium to full body. Expect citrus and slightly nutty and herbal notes with a fruit-forward, floral character, perfect for dining al fresco on summertime fare like salads, lemon-herb chicken or creamy pastas.

If you like Sauvignon Blanc, try Vermentino (say “ver-mehn-TEE-noh”)

Vermentino is mainly grown in Sardinia and northest Italy. Complex and fresh, it delivers fresh fruit notes of citrus, melon and apples. Savoury barbecue dishes such as planked salmon, fennel sausages and chicken tacos are excellent food matches, as are herbal plant-based recipes like tabbouleh salad and falafel.

If you like crisp whites or red wine, try Pecorino (say “peh-koh–REE-noh”)

Hailing mainly from Italy’s eastern coastal areas of Marche and Abruzzo, this beautifully balanced sipper features a touch of minerality. Fans of Sauv Blanc and Pinot Grigio will enjoy Pecorino's approachability and aromatic character. Red wine fans also tend to love it because it ages well and gains structure over time. Pair it with a salty, nutty cheese plate or grilled fish.

Don’t miss great offers on these fresh whites, right now and all summer long.
