In the small town of Pirque, just outside Santiago, surrounded by Chile’s most renowned Central Valley wine regions, winemaker Casillero del Diablo has become the stuff of legend. In 1883, founder Don Melchor de Concha y Toro started a rumour that the devil protected the wine cellar in an attempt to ward off thieves who were snatching his best bottles ⏤ hence the name Casillero del Diablo, or The Devil’s Cellar. Today the winery is still famous for devilishly good wine.
Its award-winning lineup includes silky Merlot from the Reserva line, with notes of chocolate and berries, and Devil’s Collection Red, a dark, brooding blend of four varietals filled with black fruits and spice. Equally enticing is Belight Sauvignon Blanc, made with early harvest grapes to limit sugar levels to just 5 g/L and only 8.5% alcohol.
Ranked as Chile’s best-selling, most admired wine label, it’s easy to see why you’d be tempted by The Devil’s Cellar.
