A Glass with Lawrence Buhler of House Wine Co.

Since joining House Wine Co. in 2018, Lawrence Buhler is making it his mission to create Ontario’s favourite house wines. And he’s succeeding with budget-friendly blends that are perfect for everyday sipping.

The Wines: Best in House

What makes a great house wine? It comes down to flavour, versatility and value. “Everyday wine is what we’re all about,” says Buhler, who blends local and international varietals from locally grown grapes harvested at Henry of Pelham’s 300-acre Niagara vineyard. “We like to keep things simple. Serious wine doesn’t have to be complicated. But it needs to be good.”

“If you like savoury reds with spicy oak and dark fruit aromas, our Cabernet-Shiraz is an ideal choice.”

The Winery: Sustainability Leader

While House Wine Co. is relatively new, the people behind the blends — Niagara’s celebrated Speck family — have been farming the land for six generations. True local leaders, they helped found the Vintners Quality Alliance (VQA) in 1988, and the local winery was among the first to follow Sustainable Winemaking Ontario’s standards for sustainable winemaking. Today, the award-winning winery is home to seven brands, including House Wine Co., named in honour of the family’s favourite “house party” wines.

How to Enjoy

For year-round grilling, the Cabernet-Shiraz blend makes a great barbecue partner. The Vidal-Moscado and Pink House Rosé pair well with spicy shrimp, and chips and salsa.
