Women of Spirits: Katherine Vellinga of Zirkova Vodka

The idea for Zirkova Vodka came from Katherine Vellinga’s deep desire to pay tribute to both her Ukrainian roots and the home she feels lucky to have grown up in — Canada. When Vellinga went to Ukraine in her late 20s to work and discover her parents’ homeland, she wound up living in the heart of vodka country, where she learned all about its origins and traditions. After returning to Canada, she came up with the unique concept for Zirkova: a Ukrainian-Canadian vodka that represents a bridge between two worlds.

The Spirits

Zirkova is actually two separate award-winning vodkas, each custom-designed for different uses — and representing two wildly distinct vodka cultures. Zirkova One Premium Vodka is a sipping spirit that’s meant to be enjoyed straight, alongside food and conversation. Zirkova Together is intended to be a next-level cocktail vodka to represent — and fit in with — Canada’s burgeoning world-class cocktail culture.

We use a classic slow-filtration method that gently removes impurities but leaves the heart of the spirit intact. The resulting lively and aromatic spirit enhances and elevates the flavour of anything you mix it with.

The Distillery

Vellinga knew her vision for Zirkova could be realized nowhere else than in Ukraine, so she makes it there, according to her design, in the heart of the birthplace of vodka — because to her, it stands for the freedom to be your authentic self. More than just a brand, Vellinga’s vodka is a product of her own self-discovery, and she works hard to pay her good fortune forward by raising money for causes in line with the spirit of the vodka, especially LGBTQ+ events and organizations in Canada.
