Next In Spring Cocktails

From zesty fruit flavours to coffee-based and fizzy, try new takes on springtime sippers.

 


Hibiscus Margarita

Dip rims of two tumblers into a shallow saucer of water, then in flaky or hibiscus salt. Pour 1 cup (250 mL) brewed hibiscus tea, 1 oz agave nectar or Simple Syrup, 2 oz fresh-squeezed pink grapefruit juice, 1 oz triple sec, 2 oz blanco or reposado tequila into a cocktail shaker filled with ice. Shake until thoroughly chilled, at least 15 seconds. Taste and adjust sweetness, if desired. Fill prepared glasses with ice. Strain equal amounts of cocktail through a cone-shaped cocktail strainer into each glass. Garnish with grapefruit wedges.

Espresso Nitroni

Add 1 oz Canadian whisky, ¾ oz Campari, ½ oz maple syrup and ¼ tsp (1 mL) salt to an ice-filled shaker. Shake well for 45 seconds. Strain into a chilled martini glass. Shake a can of nitro cold brew espresso (such as Two Bears or Rise) well. Pour 3 oz into the martini glass, taking care to stop before it overflows. Add 2 dashes orange bitters and garnish with a twist of lemon.

Salty Dog Spritz

Place kosher salt on a small plate. Using a thin piece of grapefruit, swipe up the side of a rocks glass reaching the rim. Press dampened area on glass in salt. Squeeze 3 oz juice from grapefruit. Fill glass with ice. Pour in ½ oz vodka. Top with 3 oz grapefruit juice and 2 oz chilled soda water. Garnish with a grapefruit wedge or twist.

Smirnoff Vodka Lemonade Soda

Pour 1½ oz vodka into a tall glass such as a Collins. Pour in 4 oz lemonade and stir to mix. Top with club soda. Garnish with a lemon wheel.

Pineapple Daiquiri

Pour 1½ oz rum, ½ oz simple syrup, ¾ oz lime juice, ¾ oz pineapple juice and 1 pinch of salt (five grains of rock salt) into a cocktail shaker filled with ice. Shake for 45 seconds. Strain into chilled daiquiri glass. Garnish with a pineapple wedge studded with 5 cloves.

Maple Leaf Cocktail

Add 1½ oz Canadian rye whisky and a dash of each maple liqueur and bitters to a tumbler. Stir. Add ice and a splash of soda (if desired). Fill a bowl with crushed ice. Dribble about 1 tbsp maple syrup onto ice until it stiffens into taffy. Stick a wooden swizzle stick into the taffy and roll it up onto the end of the stick. Place the stick into the drink (taffy end first).
