Meet Errol Nazareth

And then find out his top picks for the best BBQ playlist ever

LCBO: You’ve lived in many different parts of the world — some that are warm year-round. Do you have several ideas of what “summertime” means?

Errol Nazareth: Definitely. I grew up in the Middle East and India, so it was always summer! So going to the beach or taking road trips was the norm. I guess the concept of "summer" hit when I studied in England, but we didn’t indulge in your traditional Ontario summer activities — a break from studies, summer job, going to the EX, music festivals — because I was at boarding school. I guess I'm making up for that now!

LCBO: If you could get together with all your closest friends for just one event in the summer, what would it be?
EN: Just one? I guess it would have to be The New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival. Checked it many, many years ago and had the time of my life. Great food, great music and great people.

LCBO: What’s your favourite BBQ meal?
EN: Maple Syrup & Chinese 5 Spice Sausages from Sanagan’s, my favourite butcher. Or my neighbour Brenton Brown’s awesome jerk turkey leg with rice and peas and roasted sweet potato.

LCBO: Your playlist is full of both classic and unique summertime music. But Is there one song on it in particular that never fails to make you think of summer?
EN: Easy. The Isley Brothers’ version of Seals and Crofts’ Summer Breeze. Ron Isley’s smooth voice is the star here but so are the harmonies, the fuzz-effect lead guitar and Ernie Isley’s guitar solo.

LCBO: What does a casual summer get-together look like at your place with family and friends these days?
EN: I live on a little lane in Toronto’s east end and I’m blessed to have wonderful neighbours. We have impromptu barbecues, lane parties and film screenings, and we spend evenings sitting on our steps eating, drinking and shooting the (summer) breeze.
