Explore the heart of Australian winemaking

Australia has a reputation for crafting award-winning wines that are truly world class. Nearly half of the country’s vineyards are concentrated in the state of South Australia, including some of the best-known brands such as Penfolds and Yalumba. Thanks to a wide range of climates, soil conditions and landscapes, 18 wine regions with distinctive characteristics have emerged within South Australia. Start your journey with these four captivating regions:

The oldest, McLaren Vale – the birthplace of wine in South Australia in the 1800s – is renowned for its sustainable winemaking. The Vale’s warm coastal climate creates ideal growing conditions for producing rich, full-bodied reds, such as Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon. Those outstanding red varietals are also the specialty in Clare Valley, a picturesque region known for its classic producers, who also make some of Australia’s best Riesling. Further south, Coonawarra’s unique red soils and maritime climate make it ideally suited for creating powerful, complex Cabernet Sauvignons with concentrated dark fruit flavours. In South Australia’s most famous region, the Barossa Valley located northeast of Adelaide, the warm dry summers and rich deep soils are perfect for making premium, age-worthy reds including Cabernet Sauvignon and the region’s bold, juicy Shiraz – the iconic grape that helped make Australia one of the most celebrated wine regions in the world.
