2016 GREEK WINE INDUSTRY AWARD PRESENTED TO LCBO’S ACTING PRESIDENT AND CEO GEORGE SOLEAS

LCBO’s acting President and CEO George Soleas has been honoured in Athens, Greece with the prestigious 2016 Greek Wine Industry Award. The international recognition is given to individuals who have made a significant contribution to the wine industry in Greece.
Soleas has spent more than a quarter-century visiting wineries across Greece and meeting with their owners on his personal time. With his guidance, the industry has made many wise investments to its training, technology and marketing.
“As a Canadian of Greek-Cypriot origin, I have always believed in the potential of Greek wines to measure among the best on the world stage. And now they do,” says Soleas. “The Greek wine industry has evolved significantly over the past 25-years and I could not be prouder of all it has accomplished. I am humbled to be the 2016 recipient of this distinguished award.”
Recipients of the honour are internationally respected and recognized across the global wine industry. Past winners include Tara Q Thomas, Christoph Meininger, Jancis Robinson, Julia Harding and Dr. Jose Vouillamoz.
In May 2015, LCBO launched its Products of the World program beginning with Greece at Toronto’s Greektown store on the Danforth. About 75 products are unique to the location because they from LCBO’s Consignment Program, which means they are available to consumers for the first time outside of Greek bars and restaurants. Compared to this time last year, sales of Greek products at the store are up 150 per cent.
