The LCBO estimates that smuggled liquor and illegally manufactured wine
represented over $681 million – or more than five per cent of the
$9.2-billion Ontario beverage alcohol market – in 2008-2009.
Not to mention the other costs related to illegal alcohol: health risks,
job loss to legitimate industry and government revenue losses, which means
less money to pay for social and capital programs that benefit all citizens.
