This Month We're Mixing…

Caesars

Invented in 1969 by a Calgary bartender, the Caesar has become our unofficial national cocktail. “People love it because it’s so easy to customize,” says Alanna Bailey, LCBO spirits buyer. “You can make it as spicy as you like, and experiment with the recipe, the garnish or even the base spirit. It’s also delicious in a virgin cocktail.” This summer, we’re mixing it up two ways — a classic vodka version with a seafood spin, and a whisky Caesar with a spicy kick.

CHOOSE YOUR SPIRIT

While vodka is the most popular, many other spirits — from gin to rum, tequila or Canadian whisky — can add a different twist to a Caesar, says Bailey.

MIX IT UP

Mott’s Clamato is the best-known Caesar base, but other brands are gaining ground, including Walter Craft Caesar Mix and French’s.

TOP IT

Garnishing the Caesar has become a national pastime. “I love the classic celery best,” Bailey says. “And if I have it on hand, a slice of crispy bacon does the trick.”
